Tories sink their own anti-union inquiry

The following has been supplied by PCS HQ:

A barrister hand-picked by the government to report on trade union campaigning has abandoned his review after the Tories jumped the gun.

Bruce Carr, leading what was widely seen as an anti-union inquiry, will produce only a scaled down report and make no recommendations.

His official statement cites "a progressively politicised environment in the run up to the general election".

But the Guardian reports Carr took exception to recent commitments outlined by the Tories on union ballots and picketing.

This will of course not stop the Tories from pursuing their anti-union agenda but it does remove the thin veil of independence and respectability they had hoped the QC would provide.
Our general secretary Mark Serwotka told the media: "The Tories hand-picked Bruce Carr to do their bidding but it appears even he couldn't stomach their anti-union rhetoric.
"This exposes the review as a facade for an attack not just on more than six million trade union members but on all working people and their communities."
